Goal: 5 Things You Need In Place To Achieve Your Goal

female mountain climber achieve goal

In my 20 years experience of coaching and mentoring over 621 people to reach their personal, business and career goals, one of the most consistent factors I have found is that the vast majority of people had failed in the past to reach the goals they had set for themselves.

These were smart, savvy, intelligent and driven men and women, but their fail point came because they didn’t have the fundamentals in place that they needed to be successful.

These are the 5 Success Formula Fundamentals you need to achieve your goals this year.  I will let you in on a little secret. Once I worked with them and shared a formula that worked, a funny thing happened. They achieved their goals and they also achieved success in their family, relationships, finances,  career, and business as well—we call this the ripple effect.

Success Formula Fundamentals =

Clarity + Action + Skills + Environment + Psychology

These are the 5 Success Formula Fundamentals you will need to have in place:

1. Goal Clarity

Clarifying your direction or understanding why you want to achieve a goal is imperative not only to achieving your goals, but also to achieving the right goals.

Clarity is extremely important to ensure that you set and reach the right goals.  Surprisingly, a lot of people get this wrong, mainly because they view their goals in isolation to the rest of their life.

The simple formula for setting and achieving goals is to view what you are striving for in line with everything that is important to you in your life.

For example, when I was coaching Karen, she wanted to lose weight, but without clarity around how much, by when  and how she planned to measure it.  Perhaps even more importantly, why?!.  It’s the why that kept her grounded and caused the changes in her behaviour she needed to be successful.

2. Take Strategic Actions Towards Your Goal

When you have clarity of the right goals, you then need a specific action plan.  Not a one size fits all approach, but specific actions which are steps toward your goals.  Each step you take should be putting you one step closer to success.

A lot of people I have worked with, who even had goal clarity didn’t really know where to start in setting specific actions in place to take them toward their goals.  They either got distracted or gave up and blamed something or someone else for their lack of achievement.

I don’t want this to happen to you, so take some time to strategically focus your action towards achieving your goals.

For example, when I was coaching Ann, she was clear about her goal, which was to add so much value throughout the year that her clients would invite her to their holiday party.  I coached her through to put specific actions in place that she diligently carried out throughout the year.  When her client’s holiday party came around, it clashed with her holiday, but they changed the date of their party to include her.  She was over the moon and focused on bigger goals the following year.

3. Hone Your Skills In The Right Areas To Achieve Your Goal

You often hear the line, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”.  The truth is, if you want to achieve something new in your life, you may need new skills to be able to achieve it.

One of the most important attitudes you can cultivate in your life is to be continually learning and continually developing new skills.  Knowledge is the one thing that no one can ever take away from you, ever!

When you go through the process of setting your actions in place, it should become evident what new skills you might need.  You will then need to find an avenue to gain these skills in order to achieve your goals.  This step is often the one that most people miss and instead they just give up on their dreams and goals.

For example, when I was mentoring Cheryl, she lacked confidence to change jobs because she thought it was beyond her to learn anything new.  Cheryl hadn’t been encouraged much previously, so it was going to take a little while for her to gain the confidence she needed to believe in herself.

I introduced one new skill at a time while she was doing her current role.  Within three months, Cheryl had the skills, but still needed more confidence.  With some self-confidence exercises, she was ready and when she took on the new role, she loved it and her confidence grew dramatically.  Cheryl became one of the best performers in her department and went on to teach many of the new staff that came into her area.

4. Optimising Your Environment For Goal Success

The environment you live and work in is key to your success, but all too often you may forget about it.  Cleaning out temptations and distractions can make it much easier to be successful and it’s a lot easier than relying on your willpower.

Then you bring into your environment some success enablers to support your success.  Simple things such as colour, aromas and sounds can support you towards success and can be a powerful ally.  You can also bring in someone to support you, such as a mentor or coach.

For example, when I was finished with treatment for breast cancer, I mentored women who had just been diagnosed.  I mentored different women over a period  of five years.  A mentor or coach is one of the tools that you can use as a success enabler.

One of the things I advised them to clear out of their environment was anything that was the same colour as their chemo drugs. I learned the hard way, as I had two bottles of sauce in my kitchen the exact same colours as my chemo drugs and I would dry reach (or throw up), every time I walked into the kitchen! Not too good if you ever want to cook a meal there.

5. Mastering Your Thoughts and Beliefs About Goals

Even with clarity, actions, skills and setting up your environment for success—fear, doubt and beliefs can stop you from taking the steps that you need to move forward.  This can be particularly evident if you have been through a trauma.

After trauma you can feel like the earth has shifted underneath you and tread more wearily than you have before.  A common belief is “I have to do it by myself”.  This just isn’t true and in fact, the most effective way to move through faster is to get help from a mentor, coach or advisor to support you.

You can also hold fear around talking to people about your problem, as you still hold that belief that you “have to do it alone”.

Or, perhaps you may have doubt that no one understands enough what you have been through, to be able to help you.

I work with mentors in many areas of my life, as I believe that life is too precious to waste.  It’s far too precious to waste time battling when I could be living the life of my dreams!
